Yaz and Pulmonary Embolism

Yaz and pulmonary embolism

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006, Yaz is an oral contraceptive manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals that has been linked to pulmonary embolism (PE). Yaz contains drospirenone, a synthetic hormone that mimics the natural hormone progesterone.

In a warning delivered in April 2012, the FDA cited studies whose data showed that drospirenone-containing contraceptives place users at a higher risk of developing a blood clot when compared to those contraceptives containing the hormone levonorgestrel or others. In fact, in an FDA mandated study, the results showed a two-fold increase in the Yaz blood clot risk among 800,000 study participants.

Yaz & Pulmonary Embolism

Pulmonary embolism occurs when one or more blood clots form in the lungs, and hinder blood flow in the pulmonary arteries. As a result, the body experiences a life-threatening interruption to normal circulation and blood oxygen levels.

PE is categorized under the disease called venous thromboembolism. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is also a type of venous thromboembolism. In fact, PE is often the result of DVT. For example, if an individual develops a blood clot in a deep vein in one or both of her legs, those blood clots can migrate to the pulmonary arteries in her lungs, thus placing her life in serious danger.

PE symptoms include coughing, especially with blood, acute chest pain, trouble breathing normally, and extreme dizziness.

Signs of DVT include aching, swelling, redness, or warmth in one or both legs, and bulging veins.

Oftentimes, individuals who develop a blood clot do not experience these symptoms, which places them at greater risk of fatality.
