A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology in 2006 documented hormone level changes in patients consuming Risperdal. The researchers found a significant increase in the presence of the hormone prolactin, a protein essential to milk production. With higher levels of prolactin in the body, the researchers noted that the hormone could trigger an increase in development of breast tissue, a condition called gynecomastia.
The study, Risperidone-induced symptomatic hyperprolactinaemia in adolescents, advised that caution be used when prescribing Risperdal to adolescent patients.
Risperdal & Male Breast Growth
The consumption of Risperdal increases production of the hormone prolactin, which in turn, prompts breast tissue development, especially in adolescent male patients. An increase in breast tissue development is known medically as gynecomastia.
For some male Risperdal patients with gynecomastia, the physical changes result in psychological distress. Reversing the effects of gynecomastia often requires either liposuction or surgery.
