In 2006, the FDA released an alert about the increased risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) in children exposed to Prozac in the womb.
The FDA made their safety announcement after reviewing a piece of research published in the New England Journal of Medicine which examined the link between SSRI anti-depressants, such as Prozac, and the incidence of PPHN in newborn children. Conducted over a five year period, at the end of the study, researchers concluded that, when taken after the twentieth week of pregnancy, SSRIs significantly increase the risk of PPHN in children six fold.

Though Prozac has been linked to a number of congenital birth defects, including heart defects and Omphalocele, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, or PPHN, remains one of the most commonly reported birth defects. PPHN is a serious health problem in which blood flow bypasses the lungs, thus circulating low-oxygen blood throughout the body. Oftentimes, newborns with PPHN become hypoxemic, a state in which blood has low oxygen levels.
