Vision & Eye Problems related to Elmiron

Elmiron (Pentosan Polysulfate)

It is currently estimated that as many as 1 million people in the united states, mostly women,  have been diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis, commonly called painful bladder syndrome.  Elmiron (Pentosan Polysulfate), manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals,  was approved by the FDA in 1996 and is the only oral medication currently marketed in the United States to treat the pain that is associated with Interstitial Cystitis.  Recent research supports that there is a statistically significant association between Elmiron use and the development of macular eye disease. (1.)   It is believed that Janssen Pharmaceuticals was aware of potential permanent eye damage related to long-term use of taking Elmiron, however, it failed to warn of these possible catastrophic and irreversible injuries.
