Issues with NuvaRing & Blood Clots
NuvaRing is a ring-shaped contraceptive device manufactured by Organon, a unit of Merck. NuvaRing contains two hormones, etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol. These newer types of hormones have been linked to an increased risk of venous thromboembolism, or blood clots.
The NuvaRing contraceptive device, which is inserted vaginally, gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2001.
A study published in Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management in 2008 cites a number of studies that recorded instances of blood clot formation, specifically three cases of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), in users of NuvaRing.
Venous Thromboembolism
Venous thromboembolism is the formation of a blood clot in a vein. DVT along with pulmonary embolism (PE) and retinal artery occlusion are types of venous thromboembolic events that can occur while using the NuvaRing. In DVT, a blood clot forms in a deep vein, quite often in the legs. Pulmonary embolism involves one or more blood clots blocking blood flow in the lung’s arteries. Retinal artery occlusion is when a blood clot forms in the eye’s artery, impairing sight.
Signs that someone may be experiencing DVT are swelling, warmth, unusual coloring, and pain in one or both legs. It is possible for a blood clot to form in a deep vein in the leg, and migrate to the lungs or eyes.
Symptoms of PE include acute chest pain, trouble breathing, and coughing up blood.
A sign that a blood clot has formed in the eye is loss of vision.
It is important to keep in mind that, although there are symptoms for each type of blood clot event, some individuals may not show any signs of having a blood clot in their legs, lungs, or eyes.
