Actos and Bladder Cancer
Known generically as pioglitazone, Actos is a diabetes medication manufactured by Japanese pharmaceutical company, Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Actos gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2007 to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus.
In August 2011, the FDA issued a safety update concerning Actos and bladder cancer. The communication stated that a new version of the Actos drug label had been approved by the FDA. The drug label update included a warning about prolonged use of Actos, especially for more than one year, put patients at a higher risk of developing bladder cancer.
In a study published in the British Medical Journal in May 2012, researchers concluded that the use of Actos does increase the risk of bladder cancer, especially in those patients consuming higher dosages for longer periods of time. The researchers observed the risk of bladder cancer increase significantly in patients using Actos for more than two years.
Actos & Bladder Cancer
Symptoms of bladder cancer are those affecting urinary health and function. The most common sign of bladder cancer is blood in the urine. Though the blood may sometimes be visible, it is possible that its presence can only be detected by microscope. Additionally, patients with bladder cancer may also experience painful and frequent urination.
